MILES DAVIS
 Jazz trumpeter Miles Davis signed this document in 1956 to amend his 1955 contract with Columbia Records. This contract allowed Davis to put together a permanent band with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones.
 Document signed "Miles Davis" and by a representative of Columbia Records. Pencil notations near right edge in unknown hand. 1 page, 8½x11, on Columbia Records letterhead with six file holes at top edge, carbon copy on thin paper. May 31, 1956. Addressed to Mr. Miles Davis c/o Shaw Artist Corporation, New York City. This document modified an Oct. 27, 1955 contract between Davis and Columbia regarding advance payments. After Miles signed this contract with Columbia, he was able to put together a permanent band with saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. They started recording their first album, 'Round About Midnight in October of 1955. Famed trumpeter Davis (1926-1991) was a pioneer of cool jazz in the 1940s, leading many small groups. Blending contemporary musical trends with jazz, Davis was awarded Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Soloist in 1982 for We Want Miles, in 1986 for Tutu and in 1989 for Aura. In 1993, Davis and Quincy Jones won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Ensemble for Miles and Quincy Live at Montreaux, recorded shortly before Davis' death in 1991. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Carbon copy marks. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
